Design services apply to the introduction and evolution of well-designed software with the quality attributes that will ensure its efficient development during the product life and its continued acceptance by the market and its users.

The services will apply when an organisation decides to apply these principles in the following situations:

  • Development of a green field system
  • Complete redesign of an existing system
  • Wrapping of an existing system to interface with a new system
  • Re-factoring of parts of an existing system

The design services apply the principles of object orientation and component based development. They take account of the need by clients to:

  • Develop software using a suitable methodology such as RUP and XP
  • Develop software using suitable techniques such as Test Driven Design
  • Make use of emerging and maturing software development environments such as J2EE and .NET
  • Use a range of development tools which may be open source
  • Apply web services as a means of integrating systems

Examples of the areas of service are:

1. the adoption of the principles of object orientation in the development of software

2. use of modern analysis and design techniques in software development

3. the selection of a software development environment and development tools

4. the modelling of systems using graphical notations

5. the effective use of the open source tool environment

6. the application of patterns and design techniques to improve the clarity, quality and productivity of development

7. the application of a suitable methodology and/or techniques for software development
